It's always walking a fine line between losing mass and how "perfect" you want the stone to be before polishing. The more perfect you want, the smaller they will get. Sometimes you just got to call them ready if you don't want them too small.
Interesting! I've been following Rock Tumbler recipes so using 2 Tbsp of grit per pound of material. Going through a whole lot more grit than you're suggesting! I've never heard of Old Miser Grit Carrier - I'm going to search for that forthwith. I've been adding Borax in later stages to avoid bruising - mostly with trickier rough like Tiger's Eye. I haven't used it for agates or jasper except during the burnishing stage.
I only cover the rocks completely in Stage 1 for softer rocks. Mohs 6.5 and above I fill water to about 1/4" below the rock line.
I'll have to give your recipe a try. Probably save me a fortune in grit costs! 😉
